Rat & Mice Care
Here are some essential tips for caring for your little companions to keep them healthy and help prevent common health issues. We’re always happy to discuss routine care in more detail during your pet’s annual physical examination.
Housing
When it comes to housing, choose a spacious cage or aquarium that allows your pets to move freely. A minimum of 15–20 gallons is recommended for two rats, while two female mice can comfortably live in a 10-gallon tank. Ensure the enclosure is gnaw-proof and well-ventilated, avoiding materials that could corrode over time. Include plenty of climbing opportunities, such as ramps and shelves, and provide hiding spots using cardboard tubes or commercially available igloos. Regular cleaning is crucial to maintain a hygienic environment and prevent odors.
Diet
Diet is another vital aspect of rodent care. A high-quality, fortified food should make up about 75% of their daily intake. Supplement this with fresh vegetables, greens, and fruits, which should comprise around 20% of their diet. Always consult with your veterinarian for specific dietary recommendations tailored to your pets’ needs. Healthy treats can also be a fun way to bond with your pets, but remember to limit these to about 5% of their daily food intake to avoid overfeeding.
Social Interaction
Lastly, social interaction is essential for the mental and emotional well-being of your rats and mice. These animals thrive on companionship, so consider adopting them in pairs or groups. Spend time each day handling and playing with them to strengthen your bond and keep them mentally stimulated. By providing a suitable environment, a balanced diet, and regular interaction, you can ensure your furry friends lead happy and fulfilling lives.
